The situation heats up / Finland does not withdraw from NATO membership, Finnish President calls Putin, conversation between them becomes clear
Written by SOT.COM.AL 14 Maj 2022
The President of Finland Sauli Niinistö addressed his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin today with the statement that the Nordic nation will make the decision on NATO membership in the coming days.
During a telephone conversation initiated by Finland, "President Niinistö told President Putin that essentially Russian demands at the end of 2021 aimed at non-NATO membership and the massive Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 have changed the security system in Finland. ", It is said in the statement.
"The conversation was direct and took place without tensions. "Avoiding tensions was considered important," Niinistö was quoted as saying in a statement.
Niinistö noted that he had already told Putin at their first meeting in 2012 "that every independent nation maximizes its security" and that "this is what is happening now," the statement said.
Niinisto also reiterated his deep concern over the human suffering caused by Russian forces in Ukraine and stressed the imperative of peace. He called for the safe evacuation of civilians, the statement said.
Following Finland's announcement that it plans to apply for NATO membership, Russia has blocked energy supplies to Finland and even conducted military exercises in its Baltic Sea enclave of Kaliningrad.
