Has the fourth wave started? Concerned German experts tell what to expect during

The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) warns of the possibility of the start of the fourth wave of the pandemic. RKI refers to the situation in intensive care units in hospitals and the increasing number of infections.

"The number of infections can be expected to increase during the autumn and winter months," the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) wrote in its new weekly pandemic report.

RKI reports that on Friday (22.10) 19,572 new infections were registered in one day. This is 8,054 cases more than a week ago. The weekly incidence increases to 95.1 from 85.6, as it was the day before. The figure shows how many people per 100,000 inhabitants have been infected with the coronavirus in the last seven days. Even intensive care physicians sound the alarm due to the lack of nurses.

4000 beds less

The German Interdisciplinary Association for Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine (Divi) announced that "a significant limitation on population care can be expected" in the coming period. There are currently 22,207 intensive care beds in use, up from 2,475 at the beginning of the year. In recent months there has been a deterioration of the situation that has resulted in the departure of regular nurses, reports Divi.

"Predictable severe wave of autumn and winter" with many patients with COVID-19, but also other infectious diseases of the respiratory system, such as influenza, can create an unbearable condition for intensive care in Germany, is quoted as having said Stefan Kluge, director of the Clinic for Intensive Care Medicine, during a presentation at the Hamburg-Eppendorf University Medical Center.

"The fourth wave has already begun and continues to grow rapidly," Divi expert Christian Karagiannidis wrote on Twitter. There is still a very close correlation between incidence and new cases in intensive care units. According to the Divi Intensive Care Register, the number of COVID-19 patients there has now risen to around 1,540.

Again more cases in nursing homes

But RKI claims that infections with serious consequences are very rare in vaccinated people. There are also many people who have only been vaccinated with Johnson & Johnson. People who have received this vaccine are recommended by the Standing Vaccination Commission, regardless of age, to receive an additional dose of the mRNA vaccine.

The RKI report states that significantly higher incidence than the elderly are recorded in younger age groups, when the vaccination rate is lower. In the case of children and adolescents aged ten to 14, last week there were 182 infected per 100,000 inhabitants. But cases have also increased among middle-aged people (35 to 44) ./ DW
