Invited to the show Rin Talk on Euronews Albania, sociologist Eris Dhamo spoke about the concept Albanians have of virginity, referring to boys and girls.

The sociologist said that the loss of virginity in Albania is considered something shameful for girls and an achievement for boys, who are considered men by society after having the first sexual intercourse.

According to her, this type of thinking is a form of pressure on girls, forcing them to see virginity as something sacred.

"If virginity is seen as a gift for girls, it is seen as a taboo for boys if they can consider it as such. Talking about intimacy and the discussion we do about virginity is exactly in this dimension as if for a girl it is the most sacred thing you have and "take care and protect", this is the great social pressure we do. While for boys we also trumpet the loss of virginity, we say you grew up, while for girls we pressurize "shame, what are you doing".

This brings precisely this triumph in the discussion of the boys and the shame of the girls", said Dhamo.
