Destructive earthquake, 14 victims and hundreds of injured are reported

A 6.5 magnitude earthquake struck Ecuador a day ago. It is reported that there are 14 victims and 126 injured, but the number is thought to be higher. The US Geological Survey recorded the earthquake's epicenter in the coastal region of Guayas, about 80 kilometers south of Guayaquil.

The earthquake was also felt in the north of Peru, where there is one victim. The impact was registered at 12:12 local time (18:12 in Albania) in the Ecuadorian municipality of Balao, about 140 kilometers from the port of Guayaquil and at a depth of 44 kilometers. The US Seismological Institute estimated a magnitude of 6.8 on the Richter scale, while Peruvian seismological authorities rated it at 7.0.

Aftershocks have been warned and the Oceanographic and Antarctic Institute of the Ecuadorian Navy has assured that the impact "does not meet the necessary conditions to generate a tsunami" in the Pacific.
