It becomes clear what happened before the next meeting between Kosovo and Serbia! The Voice of America shows behind the scenes: The tensions of July 31, what is expected to happen in the Kurti-Vucic meeting

It becomes clear what happened before the next meeting between Kosovo and

The Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, and the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vu?i?, are expected to meet on Thursday within the framework of talks mediated by the European Union, to discuss the way to an agreement for the normalization of relations.

The European Union said the meeting aims to ease tensions between the two sides, which followed Serbian reactions to the Kosovo government's decision to implement reciprocity on the use of identification documents and car license plates.

But, one day before the meeting, the two leaders will talk separately with the Secretary General of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, who immediately after the tensions of July 31 had talked by phone with Prime Minister Kurti and President Vucic, calling for the differences to solve them through diplomacy.

Secretary Stoltenberg reiterated NATO's readiness to intervene, as he said, in case stability is compromised or jeopardized.

On August 1, the government of Kosovo decided to postpone for one month the implementation of reciprocity measures, at the request of the American ambassador Jeff Hovenier, who said that the postponement was necessary since there was misinformation and misunderstandings about the decisions. However, Ambassador Hovenier and other Western diplomats said that the government's decisions are legal and in accordance with the Brussels agreements.

Observers are not very optimistic about the next meeting between Kosovo and Serbia, but hope for increased efforts by Western diplomacy to ensure progress in the talks. They call for diplomatic campaigns like these of the last few days not to be used only to avoid crises, the one on July 31. Thursday's meeting is the third in a row between Prime Minister Kurti and President Vucic, who met twice a year ago without any progress. Serbia continues to oppose Kosovo's independence, which was declared with Western support, counting on the support of Russia and China. Before leaving for Brussels, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic met with the Chinese ambassador in Belgrade./VOA
