Sudanese Prime Minister Abdallah Hamdok is under house arrest, the Arabic-language service of Sky News reported, citing a statement from his office.
Earlier, the Sudanese Ministry of Intelligence confirmed that most members of the cabinet and the national sovereignty council, which undertook the country's democratic transition after the overthrow of Omar El Bashir in 2019, have been arrested.
It is not yet clear whose orders the army obeys to take such an action, but it seems that we are dealing with a coup.
The army reportedly attacked and arrested many employees at the headquarters of the public radio and television station in Omdurman, the twin city of the capital Khartoum, as the Ministry of Information announced via Facebook.
"The army benefited from the crisis"
The director of the prime minister's office told Al Arabiya television that the Sudanese army had sparked unrest in the east of the country and was taking advantage of the crisis to stage a coup against the government today.
The coup took place despite an agreement reached by Hamdock with the head of the ruling National Council of Sovereignty, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, in the presence of US special envoy Jeffrey Feltman, he added.
For its part, the Sudanese Ministry of Information announced that the country is facing a large-scale military coup and called for the immediate release of all those arrested.
The Sudanese people should try to stop the military from trying to block the democratic transition, he told Reuters.
"We urge everyone to continue the march until the coup attempt is canceled," the information ministry said.
Hamdock urges citizens to take to the streets
In addition, Hamdock called on Sudanese to take to the streets to defend the revolution peacefully, in a statement issued by the Ministry of Intelligence.
According to the same source, the head of government was transferred to an unknown location after he refused to support the military coup.
Concern from EU, USA
