"The EU itself raised this monster"! DW: Orban's scarf with the map of the Hungarian empire sparks controversy in Europe

"The EU itself raised this monster"! DW: Orban's scarf with the

Like all egomaniacs, Viktor Orban has a constant need for attention. Recently he hung a scarf with a map of the great Hungarian empire around his neck. He nevertheless admires Putin's imperial dreams and his war in Ukraine. The Tsar of Puszta probably wanted to show that he too is the ruler of an empire, long gone. Neighboring countries felt provoked and reacted with anger. This show is completely ridiculous. Hungary, a country of 10 million people will not attack anyone and the borders of 1922 are a thing of the past. The action is nothing but a desire to stand out: the little Hungarian would like to be bigger – physically and politically.

Finally, after years of worthless criticism and fruitless complaints from the West, the EU Commission, pushed by the European Parliament, has now decided to temporarily block Viktor Orban's money. More than 13 billion euros from structural reconstruction funds and the corona fund are frozen until he seriously implements a wide catalog of reforms. This includes the end of corruption in public procurement, the restoration of an independent judiciary and much more. Viktor Orbán must at least partially stop the dismantling of democracy in his country.

So far he has made some vague promises, but has not actually followed through on any of the demands. This could cost him power. On the other hand, he urgently needs money from Brussels. Therefore he counters once again with blackmail and threatens to block aid of 18 billion to Ukraine. The same applies to the global minimum tax and the NATO membership of Finland and Sweden, which he has so far unreasonably delayed. Orban is playing pull and don't break again. But it can be hoped that the EU will finally expose his bluff.

The EU itself raised this monster

For more than a decade European institutions have allowed themselves to be dragged into the ring by the Hungarians. They cheered when he turned his state into an "elected autocracy", were shocked when he proclaimed anti-liberal democracy, and did not resist when he abolished freedom of the press, took control of the judiciary and made corruption a target. state. For a long time, there is no doubt that Viktor Orbán is violating and mocking the so-called European values ??of democracy and the rule of law.

If Europe does not finally become active in defending its democracy, then it will lose it. The course taken by Italy's new head of far-right government is a warning to anyone who believed that nationalists and populists in the EU are not to be taken too seriously. Viktor Orbán and his authoritarian demagoguery have made extreme right-wing ideas acceptable to society again and humanist values ??can be questioned. Hungary has poisoned the water and infected the soil of the democratic community in Europe. It is up to the EU heads of government to finally neutralize this risk in their ranks at their summit in December./DW
