Nuclear talks with Iran, the EU takes the unexpected decision
Written by SOT.COM.AL 8 Gusht 2022
The European Union has submitted the "final draft" to talks in Vienna to revive the 2015 Iran nuclear deal.
"We worked for four days and today the text is on the table," an official told reporters on August 8. "The negotiations have ended, this is the final text... and it will not be renegotiated."
Top officials involved in talks to revive the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and world powers said they were optimistic about the possibility of reaching a deal.
Enrique Mora, the European Union's chief negotiator, said over the weekend that he was "absolutely" optimistic about the progress made so far in the talks.
"We are making progress and I expect to conclude the talks very soon," Mora said on August 7.
The Russian ambassador, Mikhail Ulyanov, said that there are "three or four issues" that have remained unresolved.
"We are five minutes or five seconds away from the finish line," Ulyanov told reporters outside the Palais Coburg hotel, where the talks are being held.
A successful conclusion can be reached “very quickly, but there are no guarantees. As always, we cannot agree on anything until we agree on everything," he said.
"These issues are sensitive, especially for Iranians and Americans", said Ulyanov. "I cannot guarantee, but the impression is that we are moving in the right direction."
Negotiators from Iran, the US and the EU resumed indirect talks on the nuclear deal on August 4. The new round took place after several months of stalled talks.
Washington unilaterally withdrew from the nuclear deal in 2018. After that, Iran began to gradually withdraw from the agreement's obligations, enriching uranium.
Iran reached the nuclear deal in 2015 with the US, France, Germany, Britain, Russia and China. The agreement limited uranium enrichment, in exchange for the easing of international economic sanctions.
