Roberto Saviano has been living secretly for 15 years, protected by the police since the publication of the famous book "Gomorra", where he openly denounced the mafia and organized crime in Italy.

A book that became one of the best sellers but that brought him a life full of troubles and hardships. Recently, Saviano has released the graphic novel entitled "I'm still alive", a collaboration with cartoonist Asaf Hanuka. According to the Italian writer, the mafia is 'eating' Europe and in the face of this reality everyone is silent. In an interview with the Spanish newspaper Lavanguardia, Saviano explains how today is no longer the solidarity that once was when journalists were threatened with death.

The last call of this graphic novel, "I'm still alive!" Is it triumph or a cry of despair?

A desperate cry. Because they left me neither alive nor dead. To say I am alive is more the hope of the future. Since you still left my body, my spirit, I am now trying to recover my life. When I was 26 and it all happened, everything I perceived was completely different. 16 years have passed and I have lost so much. It has been very difficult. And I also realized that things had changed when Capo Bidognetti was convicted last year of making threats against me and the news did not even make a fuss. It had probably never happened before in Europe that the head of a clan was convicted of assaulting a journalist.

It is as if it were something common on the same continent where Daphne Caruana Galizia in Malta, Jan Kuciak in Slovakia and a Dutch journalist were killed. The latter after coming out of a TV channel in the center of Amsterdam. All this has not generated a reaction from civil society, so much so that organized crime has a perception many times better than politics. If you think about it, mobsters do their job and say what they want: money, power, instead, the politician says he wants my good and only wants power. The mobster does not say that he is better than me, but that he is strong. This year I saw the total loss of what was once the force of the anti-mafia war.

Have you talked about Slovakia, Malta, the Netherlands in Do these deaths speak to the power of the mafia and the lack of European fear and negligence?
