Four regions of Ukraine announced referendums to join Russia, the West immediately reacts
Written by SOT.COM.AL 21 Shtator 2022
The American ambassador in Kiev, Bridget Brink, said today that fake referendums and calls for partial mobilization by Moscow are signs of weakness on her part.
Ms Brink's reaction comes as Russian-controlled regions in eastern and southern Ukraine announced plans to hold referendums on becoming part of Russia. Referendums, expected to be held in Luhansk, Kherson, Zaporizhzhia and Donetsk regions, start on Friday 23 September and will continue until Monday 27 September.
Ambassador Brink said the United States will never recognize Russia's claim to annexed Ukrainian territory and will continue to support Kiev as long as necessary.
The spokesman of the German chancellor expressed himself in the same line with Washington, saying that fake referendums would never be recognized.
Plans to hold referendums come after a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin called them necessary as Moscow loses ground in the fighting. This has increased the pressure on the Kremlin for a tough response. Russia does not fully control any of the four regions. Only about 60% of the Donetsk region is currently in Russian hands,
Former president Dmitry Medvedev, deputy chairman of the National Security Council, said the referendums, which would join the regions with Russia, would make the borders "irreversible" and allow Moscow to use "any means" to protected them.
Asked about this issue, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that since the beginning of the operation, Moscow has said that the population of these territories must decide their own fate and that the current situation, as he said, confirms this. In a reaction to this issue, French President Emmanuel Macron called Russia's plans for a referendum, "a parody"./ VOA
