The United Kingdom on Wednesday approved the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine for use, writes BBC .

According to local media, the vaccine will be available in the market from next week.

"The government today accepted the recommendation from the Independent Drug and Health Regulatory Agency (MHRA) to approve the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine for use with COVID-19," the government said.

"The vaccine will be available throughout the UK from next week."

The UK has become the first Western country to license a vaccine against Covid, paving the way for mass immunization with the Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine to start in those most vulnerable age groups.

The vaccine has been authorized for urgent use by the Drugs and Health Products Regulatory Authority (MHRA), prior to decisions by the US and Europe. The MHRA was given the power to approve the vaccine by the government under special regulations before 1 January, when it will become fully responsible for authorizing medicines in the UK after Brexit.

The first doses of the vaccine will arrive in the coming days, the company said. The UK has purchased 40 million doses of the vaccine, which has been proven to be 95% effective in its final trials.
