Relations between Turkey and Greece are escalating, the cause is revealed

Relations between Turkey and Greece are escalating, the cause is revealed

Tensions between Greece and Turkey over the divided island of Cyprus appear to be escalating. Turkey says it is increasing its military presence on the island in response to Washington lifting an arms embargo against the Greek Cypriot administration.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu accused the US of siding with Greece, saying it has become Athens' toy in the Cyprus dispute.

"Those who side with the Greeks just to please them should not expect friendship from us, because Turkey will not bow to such acts. Turkey will take the necessary steps in Cyprus," said Mr. Cavusoglu.

This week he announced that Turkey will increase its military presence in Cyprus after Washington lifted the military arms embargo against the Greek Cypriot administration.

This Mediterranean island has been divided between the Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities since 1974. The Greek Cypriot administration is the only internationally recognized government.

US State Department spokesman Ned Price recently signaled support for Athens amid rising tensions with Ankara over Greek islands in the Aegean Sea.

"Greece's sovereignty over these islands is not questioned. But we call on countries, including our allies, to respect territorial integrity and sovereignty and avoid actions that fuel tensions," Mr. Price said.

Ankara has condemned the militarization of some of the Greek islands off the Turkish coast, which Turkey claims violate an international agreement. Athens insists it is only defending its territory from Turkish threats.

At the moment, neither Athens nor Ankara seem ready to back down. Turkish Foreign Minister Cavusoglu said Friday that Turkey is prepared to resolve tensions diplomatically, but warned that Turkey would not hesitate to use force if diplomacy fails and Turkish interests are threatened./VOA
