A new virus appears, China gives the alarm: 70% mortality, here are the symptoms it causes
Written by SOT.COM.AL 9 Gusht 2022
The alarm comes from China about a new virus that has infected 35 people so far, especially in Shandong and Henan provinces. It is called Langya virus (LayV), of the genus henipavirus and was identified in throat swabs thanks to metagenomic analysis and subsequent isolation of the pathogen. The article was published by a scientific team consisting of researchers from China and Singapore in the New England Journal of Medicine, revealing what the infectious pathogen is and what are the associated symptoms.
This infection, which falls under the category of zoonoses, causes symptoms such as fever, fatigue, cough and can also compromise liver and kidney function. Some symptoms may coincide with those given by the Sars-Cov-2 coronavirus infection, but, at least in the forms studied by scientists, they appear with greater intensity. The virus is still being studied because it is a new zoonosis for which treatments have not yet been identified. Moreover, it is such a recent discovery that a potential capacity for human-to-human transmission has not yet been demonstrated.
Identified cases are kept under close surveillance, also because henipaviruses, the family to which the Langya virus belongs, are classified by the WHO as a virus of biosecurity level 4. Mortality, in case of infection with one of these viruses, is very high and fluctuates between 40 and 70%: Much higher percentages than those of coronaviruses and, in particular, of Sars-Cov-2. It is impossible, at least for the time being, to establish a protocolable treatment process in case of infection, which makes contagion quite dangerous, as it initially happened with Covid. The only therapy is the administration of complications at this time, also because, obviously, there is no vaccine that can prevent the infection or lessen its effects.
The genus henipavirus is one of the emerging zoonoses in the Asia Pacific region. In fact, other viruses of this family have been observed, such as Hendra (HeV) and Nipah (NiV), which can infect humans found in bats.
