A fire broke out the night before in the engine of the Cossyra ferry traveling from Lampedusa to Porto Empedocle. On board the ship were 175 passengers, of whom 83 were migrants being transferred from Lampedusa, then transferred to the Italian coastguard vessel Diciotti.
Passengers from the Cossyra ferry were evacuated and transferred to the Port Authority ship Diciotti, only one family, consisting of three adults and a 14-month-old child, was taken to the patrol boat Cp324 which has already arrived in Lampedusa, while all others headed for Porto Empedocle, Italian media reports.
The evacuation was decided to keep them from waiting too long on the ship, not because your life might be in danger. The flames were extinguished thanks to the safety systems. There were 175 people on board, including 83 migrants being transferred from the Lampedusa hotspot, 10 carabinieri from the Puglia regiment, 27 crew members and 55 passengers.
