On June 12, NATO will start talks on Sweden's membership in the North Atlantic Alliance. This was announced by the General Secretary of the organization, Jens Stoltenberg, after the meeting he had with the President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara.
Stoltenberg said that it has been agreed with Erdogan that on June 12, a tripartite meeting between Sweden, Finland and Turkey will be held to start the procedures for Stockholm's admission to NATO.
He said that Sweden has already fulfilled the obligations to join NATO and that this membership will make the Alliance even stronger and safer in the face of possible threats.
We recall that Erdogan earlier strongly opposed Sweden's membership in NATO with the claim that the latter did not extradite to Turkey some of the persons declared wanted by the Turkish state under the charge of terrorism. Tensions between the two countries increased when, in the organized protests, the leader of the extreme right in Sweden also burned a copy of the holy book of the Koran.
Attempts for Finland and Sweden to join NATO have increased since Russia's military aggression against Ukraine in February 2022.
