More than 5,000 people have lost their lives and 20,534 others have been injured after one of the strongest earthquakes hit Turkey yesterday, whose tremors were also felt in Syria, while 5,775 buildings collapsed.
The 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck shortly after 4 a.m. local time Monday, 23 kilometers (14.2 miles) east of Nurdagi, Gaziantep province, at a depth of 24.1 kilometers (14.9 miles), the United States Geological Survey said. (USGS).
Nurdag is located along the Turkey-Syria border and the earthquake was felt in several countries in the region, including Syria and Lebanon.
In Turkey, 3,419 people are reported dead and 11,119 injured, while in Syria, 1,602 people have died and 1,280 have been injured.
