Breaks the rocks inside the "Nevado del Ruiz" volcano/ Scientists: The orange alert is activated, it is expected to erupt in a few days

The Colombian Geological Survey (SGC) announces that the Nevado del Ruiz volcano may erupt in the coming days or weeks. Consequently, he changed the alert level from yellow to orange. The SGC mentioned that the new alert level is due to the increase in seismic activity that the volcano has shown since March 24. Colombian scientists have discovered seismic activity associated with rock fracturing within the volcanic edifice.

This occurs on the southwest flank of the volcano at a distance of two to five kilometers from the Arenas crater and at a depth of between two and four kilometers from the summit of the volcano. The daily occurrence rate also increased from 6,500 earthquakes on March 28 to 11,000 earthquakes on March 29, foreign media reported. 

The SGC also noted that thermal anomalies have increased from October 2022 to the present. The continuation of seismic activity related to fluid movements within the volcanic channels has also been observed. This is mainly related to ash emissions.

"The community is recommended to remain calm, but to be attentive to the information provided by the SGC on the evolution of the state of the volcano," authorities said.

Nevado del Ruiz erupted on November 13, 1985 when it triggered an avalanche of mud and rocks that destroyed the town of Armero, leaving an estimated death toll of 25,000.
