Ukraine appears to be losing Poland, one of its staunchest allies in its fight against Russia. The decision was announced by the Polish Prime Minister, Mateusz Moraëiecki, during a televised speech, as a response to the disputes that have arisen between the two countries regarding wheat imports.
"We are no longer transferring arms to Ukraine, because now we are arming Poland with more modern weapons," Morawiecki said, adding that Warsaw would increase the number of banned products if Ukraine escalates the grain dispute.
The grain dispute began after Russia closed key grain shipping lanes to the Black Sea and forced Ukraine to find alternative land routes. This in turn led to large quantities of grain ending up in Central Europe. So the European Union temporarily banned wheat imports in five countries, Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Slovakia, to protect local farmers.
The ban ended on September 15 and the EU chose not to renew it, but Hungary, Slovakia and Poland decided to continue applying it.
Earlier this week, Ukraine filed a lawsuit at the World Trade Organization (WTO) against these countries over the bans, which it said were a violation of international obligations.
The row between the two countries was fueled by comments made by President Volodymyr Zelensky at the UN, who said some countries had feigned solidarity with Ukraine.
Warsaw immediately called the ambassador of Ukraine to give explanations, while denouncing the statements regarding Poland as "unjustified."
