CEREMONY/ Gun salute, national speech and 10 hours of tributes, Britain 'mourns' the death of the Queen today
Written by SOT.COM.AL 9 Shtator 2022
The United Kingdom is mourning today the death of its longest-reigning monarch, Queen Elizabeth II.
After the announcement of her death by Buckingham Palace, many important things happened, such as the proclamation of her son, Charles III, as king.
A state of mourning has officially begun across the country, which is expected to last until the Queen's funeral.
What will happen today to mark Her Majesty's death?
The King and his wife will return to London from Balmoral and the monarch will deliver his first speech alongside Prime Minister Liz Truss.
The session of the House of Commons will not start at 9:30 as planned, as both houses of Parliament will meet at noon.
MPs and peers will be invited to pay their respects to the Queen at the hearing, led by Truss. Tributes will continue until 10:00 p.m.
The government is not expected to announce any other decisions, unless something urgent happens, to allow the focus to fall entirely on the Queen during the 10-hour session.
Truss and senior ministers will also attend a public memorial service at St Paul's Cathedral in central London later in the day. The government must then confirm the length of national mourning, which is likely to be around 12 days, between now and the day after the Queen's funeral.
It will also be announced that the day of the funeral will be a public holiday in the form of the National Day of Mourning.
Throughout the course of today, King Charles will meet with Earl Marshall, the Duke of Norfolk, who is in charge of the Queen's funeral. He will decide on the length of the court or royal mourning for members of the royal family and royal families, which is expected to last a month.
