Qemal Vogli the goalkeeper who left behind unforgettable memories
Written by Kastriot Kotoni 1 Dhjetor 2022
Memories are a monument of emotions, they sometimes take you back in time and past events and sometimes raise the level of adrenaline, because the facts and events are different at the same time. The World Championship in Qatar is the biggest event of this end of the year, and what better way to add to this event great names of Albanian sports who have left an indelible mark. I remembered an article by the great Ismet Bellova about Qemal Vogli in the book "Visare tSportit Albanian" with another author, the master of sports medicine Llluka Heqimi. Qemal Vogli, the boy from Kavaja, made a name for himself in his town at the age of 15, becoming active as the goalkeeper of the first team of "Besa" in the first category of the Albanian Championship. He helped the family both by working and playing, for the reason that his two brothers were in prison, for political reasons. He left Kavaja to work at the Durrës Shipyard, where he became active again as a janitor in this city. Qemal Vogli, one of the greatest goalkeepers of all time, 11 matches with the Albanian national team and 60 international matches with clubs. Master of sports and merited master of sports, Ismet Bellova begins his writing about this Albanian sports figure. Jashini, with exceptional international fame, had high considerations, and had spoken in superlative terms about the talented goalkeeper Qemal Vogli. Of course, Jashini had seen Qemali in Moscow and they had met at a banquet, expressing himself, I am amazed by him. He is a magnificent goalkeeper: brave and courageous, with wings like an eagle. Reacts perfectly, has extremely developed reflexes, is very energetic and has a strange temperament. I have rarely seen such talent. Bellova values ??these considerations more than any medal for Qemal Vogli. Until that period, Qemal Vogli, our talented goalkeeper, had stood out with surprising greatness among the big and beautiful names such as Loro Boriçi, Vasif Biçaku, Rexhep Spahiu, Muhamet Dibra, Slava Lambi, Bahri Kavaja, Qamil Teliti, Bimo Fakja, Aristidh Parapani, Pal Mirashi, Besim Fagu, Zihni Gjinali, Xhevdet Spahiu, Muhamet Vila, Skënder Jareci, Refik Resmja, Kolec Kraja, Simon Deda and many others. Qemal Vogli became a goalkeeper of a great caliber, because his preparatory work was great. The training he did was comprehensive and extremely persistent. He did not train only in those minutes, which included the training process led by the coach. Equally important, if not more so, was the personal work he did. Qemal Vogli holds an original record in his sports career, because since the age of 17 he has worn the jersey of the National Team, playing as a "cut" and perfect conductor of his friends. Master Bellova like no one else describes the drama of this great talent who was climbing the peaks "a terrible punch" hit him to death. During an international tour of one of our teams of that time, "Dinamo" in Czechoslovakia and East Germany, in 1956, after the last match in Berlin with "Dinamo" of this city, he undertook an "adventure", dreaming of wanted to try his luck in professional western football. Qemali had forgotten that no one allowed such dreams even for him. In the last match, our football players had triumphed and the "hero" of the meeting was Qemali. He was the "Black Tiger" iturneut. Someone had thrown the hooks, to push him to go beyond the "Berlin Wall. The desolate boy had lost his mind. The "reward" we gave him and the very beautiful gift of imprisonment and then endless persecution, which completely exhausted and destroyed him. It was a tragedy like many of our people, like many Albanian young men and women, this is how our "hero" suffered... Meanwhile, the East German sports newspaper "Deutsche Sport Echo" and the football magazine "Fussball Ëoche" would pour out a flood of words beautiful and would fill the pages for our goalkeeper. And the great Mazrek, who accompanied our team on that tour, being at the same time a Germanophile of the first class, would inform Qemali immediately, since the next morning, for the published writings. - Kemal! Look how beautifully it is written for you! - Keep it and never lose these, because they constitute a very beautiful and valuable memory. We entered another article about Qemal Vogli by master Ismet Bellova in the book "GREAT GOALKEEPER". a beautiful and charming blonde, Renata stared at our boy, without taking her eyes off him, she poured herself into him step-by-step, without letting him breathe. He bathed the German chick, grabbed her with his strong wings like a sphinx, and they headed straight for the green forest near our team's campsite. Qemal Vogli had disappeared! The news of Qemali's escape had also reached Tirana and dropped like a bomb, causing great shock especially in the Ministry of Internal Affairs and sports circles. Bellova writes an extremely emotional detail in one paragraph. - Boriçi and I were among the first to learn this sad news. We were then at the "Partizani" Sports Club: he was the coach of the representative football team and I was the athletics coach. That summer morning, the athletic boys had gone to the cinema and there were only the two of us in the club - Loro and me. While we were meeting, a middle-aged man entered the courtyard of our club and, without greeting or introducing himself, told me that I should go with him to the Ministry of the Interior. I got dressed and quickly left the club, on the street, a black "Volga" was waiting. What was I, the soldier, looking for in the ministry? To be honest, I had started to worry a bit, why not, and the feeling of fear had taken over me. Yes, this situation passed quickly, as soon as I entered the minister, who received me well. After inviting me to sit down, he went to his chair and lifted the glass of the table, under which there was a picture. It was Qemal's. Instantly, his face darkened even more and said nervously - The dog is gone. It was a word that came out from the depths of his soul and seemed to be somewhat relieved. - I loved him with all my heart because he was a good athlete and had an admirable personality. I was impressed that he didn't tear the picture, but put it somewhere else, to the right of the table. But he got up from his seat, moved from the table and approached me to greet me. Then, with a friendly and kind feeling, he said to me. -Sit down, sit down, because we are going to drink a coffee, but without sugar...Drinking the coffee we talked a little. He told me about Qemal's escape and, meanwhile, repeated once again the love and respect he had always had for him. At the same time, he expressed his surprise at how and why he had done this act! Then he started instructing me: This is a form for people going abroad. I asked that goalkeeper Kavajas (he was talking about Shefqet Topi), that we should start immediately, because the team is left with only one goalkeeper. Although the order was to "not make comments", I could not keep the meeting with the minister and the purpose of my call there a secret from Loros. Moreover, I knew that he was a "Swiss man". Boriçi was surprised and stunned on the spot, remaining confused for a few moments. Eventually we buried that incident and didn't tell anyone. But the secret didn't last long. This is also due to the fact that one evening, a foreign radio station - as far as London is concerned - gave the news and even commented on it. what is the truth even though years and decades have passed, writes Bellova, no one found out exactly what happened to Qemali and how he escaped? It was never told as it was, but only that she and her master were punished, even severely, paying dearly for him. Of course, it should be noted here that even Qemali himself did not want to talk about this. A secret that he wanted to leave to time and God.
So Qemali had left the campsite. The truth is that the desire to go to the west had already arisen in Qemali and he was just waiting for the opportunity to get on the path and run away. And lo, this moment had come and the bird was not to be let go. Come play in West Germany, a stranger had told him. And while Qemali was waiting alone somewhere, on the outskirts of Berlin, a black "Mercedes" car approached and stopped next to him. The well-dressed and healthy German got out of the car and greeted him and then spoke to him in his own language: "Her Vogli!" Wollen Sie fur unsere Manschaft spielen? He was the president of the football club "Munchen 1860", the second team of Munich, after "Bayern", participating in the first League of the German championship. Insisting, the German boss spoke again: this is the salary you will receive, this is the car you will have, this is the hotel where you will settle first and then you will have your house. So he quickly left and headed for Berlin. Dumbbell in place. He clutched the business card the president gave him and was still shocked. While the person, who would help him to cross the "Berlin Wall" and who would accompany him to the entrance of the subway, was looking at him calmly. They didn't take long and left. A beautiful girl was waiting for him in Munich, where he arrived without delay. I started training with "Munchen 1860" in modern facilities and in perfect conditions. The president of the club used to drive him from the hotel to the stadium and return him in his "Mercedes". However, Qemal's mind was somewhere else in Italy, in his favorite place for big football, as well as the fact that his idols, the great and talented footballers Riza Lushta, Naim Kryeziu, and Loro Boriçi, had played there successfully. It was the product of this fantasy that went to the Austrian-Italian border, could not penetrate and thus was forced to stay in Austria. Luckily for him, the Hungarian national team would play against Austria in those days. Coach Bukovi knew Qemali well and invited him to Budapest and proposed that he return with them. Qemali accepted and after a few days he found himself alone in the Hungarian capital. Meanwhile, he was worried about the family, as if he knew very well what to do in such cases. Meanwhile, two unknown Albanians have begun to fill his mind to return to Tirana. A terrible war of motives had exploded in his head and confused his thoughts. You are a great goalkeeper and they have nothing to do! - return to Tirana! There's your family, and think what could happen to your people!" one told him. And, finally, on an autumn day, at lunchtime on an October 1956, he found himself at the magnificent Budapest airport to He headed towards Tirana where a "Gaz" of the Ministry of the Interior was waiting for him. He was sentenced to 16 years for "high treason". In 1962, he was released after three amnesties for political prisoners. He returns to civilian life tired, exhausted from the labor camps and the drying of the swamps, but also abandoned, but never by his friends, comrades and ardent sympathizers, the master Ismet Bellova concludes his writing. he found himself at the magnificent airport of Budapest to go to Tirana where a "Gaz" of the Ministry of the Interior was waiting for him. I summarized these writings because I felt that I owe my friend and professor the first words about football since I was a child, and I found the opportunity to express my gratitude to him and the generations who have given so much to Albanian sport. Bellova's postulate is "go more to stadiums and relieve stress, than to party rallies".
