Governance of the people, by the people, for the people (?)

Governance of the people, by the people, for the people (?)

The words of Abraham Lincoln to honor the soldiers who sacrificed their lives so that "the government of the people, by the people and for the people, would not perish from the earth" were said in Gettysburg on November 19, 1863, and to many political philosophers after this day, these words envelop the essence of the new American state. Often cited as a definition of democracy ‘People governance’ means that power comes from the people. 'Governance by the people' means that power is exercised by elected representatives or directly by the citizens. 'Governance for the people' means that power is exercised to serve the interests of the people, that is, the common good.

158 years after this speech, the world was shocked by the scenes in Washington after a crowd of pro-Trump supporters stormed the US Capitol building and tried to block Congress which was certifying the result of the presidential election. The country that for more than a century has been called the 'beacon of hope for democracy' was involved in an almost uprising that shocked everyone. During the minutes of the riots Biden addressed the nation saying: Please stop, the world is watching us! In fact the whole world was watching, watching a social pressure valve burst along with the indignation of Trump supporters, who call themselves the 'silent majority'. Lincoln was right-wing, the Capitol invaders are also right-wing, they proudly say they are Lincoln's party,

Donald Trump is simply a symptom, not the cause of the problem.

The riots came after two months of denial of the election result, spreading unverified allegations of voter fraud. Only after an outburst of public condemnation and grief over the events on Capitol Hill did Trump finally concede defeat. However, the damage has already been done! Trump has thrown a sledgehammer at the American political system and in the process damaged its legitimacy. He is leaving behind a chaotic and destructive legacy and has tarnished America’s reputation on the global stage. Biden's next administration will be both a change and a relief; however, it would be naive to assume that all the problems created by Trump or the biggest issues at stake for American society would simply disappear. The current White House is not specifically the problem, but a symptom of a wider set of problems, a series of social and economic unrest that is unfolding not only in the US but all over the world. The Trump phenomenon in the US, Salvini in Italy, Le Penn in France, Farange in England, Kammenos in Greece, and many others from Japan to Brazil, from Belgium to South Korea, can not be isolated phenomena, there is something that does not goes - these moves appeal to the fear and anxiety of those who feel alienated and have found fertile ground across the globe. But how did we get here? there is something wrong - these moves appeal to the fear and anxiety of those who feel alienated and have found fertile ground around the globe. But how did we get here? there is something wrong - these moves appeal to the fear and anxiety of those who feel alienated and have found fertile ground around the globe. But how did we get here?

Economic inequalities have led to major social changes which have threatened national “traditional identities”. Of course, these divisions have always been present, but something has brought them to the top of the political currents and made them more important than ever in the last decade, creating a collapse of the social terrain and a more polarized political environment and bitter. Under the slogan, "Make America Great Again," Trump transformed the Republican Party from a bastion of fiscal conservatism to an 'abandoned' class economic nationalism. His antagonism to the mainstream media and political elite found widespread repercussions, and so he built an alternative reality around himself and his bombastic approach to the country's divisions.

Now, four years later, reaching the end of his term should come as no surprise to anyone who has ended up this way. Those who toppled the Capitol may be a small minority, but a poll reveals that 45% of Republican voters agree with what happened, and moreover 40% of American right-wingers would like Trump to run again after 4 years .

Neoliberalism at the crossroads!

Noam Chomsky, a leading figure in analytic philosophy and one of the founders of the field of cognitive sciences, states that humanity in the last century has three existential threats: nuclear power, climate change, and neoliberalism. In the late 1970s and into the 1980s (from the period of great growth that theorists call egalitarian growth) with much progress and social justice, we entered the era of neoliberalism which has as an important principle the undermining of mechanisms of social solidarity and mutual support as well as avoiding popular participation in policy making. But it is not called that, it is called market freedom and democracy!

When the right and the left, approach to every political concept and with their discourse only give the illusion of a choice for the voters; when all interests are tied to a concentrated hand of powerful people; when, as Bernie Sanders puts it, 'true freedom does not happen without economic security' and when 1% of the population has as much wealth as 90% of it - there would definitely be an unstoppable storm of chaos.

In this case it was Trump - what about the other one?
