The three speeches

The three speeches

In the world, the leaders of large states and democracies are remembered for their historic positions and speeches, in difficult or defining moments for their nations. Such is considered the speech of the father of the American nation, President Abraham Lincoln, his most important speech, called the Gettysburg Address, at the Gettysburg Civil War Cemetery on November 19, 1863, where Lincoln declared the abolition of slavery. Or the speech of the most famous British Prime Minister of all time, Winston Churchill, on June 4, 1940, with the words embedded in history "We will fight on the beaches. We will never give up!". It was a speech that raised an entire nation, the British nation, to face the Nazi scourge with dread. It is good to remember the important speeches of our prime ministers. To introduce into our national consciousness the responsible and visionary attitudes of those to whom we have entrusted the heavy and immense responsibility of leading us. Undoubtedly, the first historical speech, in the full sense of the word, that had an impact on the diplomacy of neighboring states and that of the Western powers, was that of the father of our state, Ismail Qemali, in the Declaration of Independence on November 28, 1912. That day, Ismail Qemali, the president of the Assembly of Albanians and the first president of the government of the Albanian state, said: "Oh! How happy I feel today, that I see, here in Vlora, so many Albanian men gathered together, waiting with curiosity and impatience for the end of this historic meeting, for the fate of our beloved Motherland... And now, all together, as one whole and undivided body, let us work to make them proud, to advance and civilize it as befits our Free Homeland...". The speech was distinguished by the highest level of patriotism, clarity of thought and vision, as well as courage. The second remarkable historical speech is that of the Archbishop and Prime Minister of Albania, Monsignor Fan S. Noli, at the Fifth Assembly of the League of Nations on September 10, 1924. Fan Noli began his speech with the following statement: "I am afraid that more the peace-loving fervor, if he takes a look at the work done by the League of Nations during these 5 years, will raise his hands to the sky in despair and shout: "Oh! Better war than all this boring talk about peace!". Nolian oratory was at its peak. The speech awakened interest in Albania. The international press reflected it as an unusual event in the arena of world diplomacy. The Italian newspaper "Mezzogiorno" described it as "the clearest and wisest word". The Swiss newspaper "La Gazette de Lausanne" as "Incredibly clever and subtle word". The British newspaper "Daily Telegraph" as "Right words. Bomb of the Albanian bishop", while the prestigious American "The New York Times" revealed that "Bishop Prime Minister Fan Noli of Albania made the delegates of the League of Nations speechless, when he delivered one of the speeches that caused a sensation and undoubtedly one of the the most picturesque speeches". The third important speech for our history today is that of Prime Minister Edi Rama, held at the European Union-Western Balkans High Level Meeting in Brussels on June 23, 2022. The same as the action and speech of the Father of the Albanian State almost 110 years ago first, or Fan Noli's words 98 years ago, the ideas and messages of Rama's speech pleasantly surprised the jaded politicians of the European Union. "It's good and bad to be here, with all of you. Good, because we want to be here, as Europeans among Europeans. Bad, because we cannot be here as Europeans in their home, but only as guests of a divided Europe". The words of the Albanian Prime Minister were direct and with the effect of a scalpel on the deep wound of a decision-making outside the reality (with unanimity?!) of a big family like the European Union. He brought to the deranged European table a sense of shame about the ineffectiveness of a formidable power like United Europe. "What a shame for Europe this Bulgarian story! In the middle of a very hot war in the court of Europe, a NATO country takes two other NATO countries hostage in front of the eyes of the 26 EU countries, who sit in a frightening display of impotence!”. Perhaps the speech could have served as a host to sting a sleepy Europe from the churning of the diverse interests of its 27 member states, as a wink to see clearly where the Western Balkans was being plunged by the sudden lack of power to decided to open talks on expansion! And the figure most found in the speech, picked up by many Western media: "Candidate status for the EU as an anti-depressant pill"! In Rama's reprimands, the dignity of representing the interests of his small country, but courageous to speak a great truth, elegantly raised its head. This is why this speech is included in the three most important speeches of our leaders of these 110 years.
