Europe lands in Albania/ The importance of the EU-Western Balkans summit in Tirana

The leaders of the European Union will meet with their counterparts from the six countries of the Western Balkans (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Serbia) in the capital of Albania, Tirana, on December 6.

The meeting is important for one big reason: this is the first time that a major summit between the EU and the Western Balkans will be held outside the European bloc. Radio Free Europe sources in Brussels have said that there are two goals for this summit: maintaining a united front and avoiding deviations.

This is because in the last 12 months, some bad precedents have been registered in this direction.

The last summit, held in Bërdo, Slovenia, in autumn 2021, has been dominated by disagreements over whether the final declaration should include the word "enlargement", as some EU member states have expressed doubts about the idea of ??expanding the club.

However, that atmosphere does not even compare to the situation created in an informal meeting that was held between the EU and the Western Balkans in Brussels on June 23.

Although the last meeting was considered historic as Ukraine and Moldova have gained the status of candidate countries for membership, Bosnia and Herzegovina has not gained such status.

Albania and North Macedonia have failed to start membership talks, due to unresolved issues between Skopje and Sofia.

There are indications that the summit in Tirana will go a little better.

First, the meeting will be held for only half a day, which means less time for disagreements.

Secondly, the draft document that Radio Free Europe has seen, in which the 27 member countries have worked in recent weeks, is optimistic and not too critical of the six countries of the Western Balkans.
