The former Minister of the Interior, Sandër Lleshaj, invited to a studio, commented on the protests of 2019 when he was still in office and after which he resigned.
Lleshaj said that he did not give permission for the use of tear gas, as the law provides for it as a tool for the police in such cases.
He added that at that time he was referred to as "Sander the chemist", but he said that this was better than being called "Sander the ballistic".
The former minister further said that the people pointing the finger at him opened fire and used bullets against the protesters, killing innocent people "in the heart of Tirana".
"If we want to understand the opposition today, we have to look at 2019, because that's when the collapse began. There, the opposition was involved in an unprecedented violence against the institutions. There was a protest where what they intended didn't work. The next day they left the parliament and then tried to enter there more violently. Their destruction is a positive thing in my opinion. A mentality of violence and revolution has been destroyed. It has also crumbled as an option for taking power. This rhetoric ended in 2019.
A political option such as violence proved impossible and useless. It is no longer possible to play with the institutions or the international factor. The country needs to create new alternatives without deep roots in history.
I did not give permission for the tear gas as it is given by law. The law tells the police that they have these tools at their disposal. In this sense, those protests with Molotov cocktails and pyrotechnics could not be handled by the police without tools such as water and gas. Chemistry is used there. They called me the chemist, and so on, and I told them it's better to be Sander the chemist than ballistics.
Those who pointed the finger at me forgot that before they used bullets in the heart of Tirana and killed innocent people. They were not ashamed then and they are not ashamed even today that they left orphaned children and widowed women", he said, among other things.
