SPAK raises the bar/ The EU Ambassador reveals the strong reason why she landed in Altin Duman's office: Sensational issues that have been opened and it does not end here

The Ambassador of the European Union in Tirana, Christine Hohmann, spoke about the meeting she had recently with the new head of the Special Prosecutor's Office, Altin Dumani.

In her first interview given in our country after the appointment, Hohmann expressed her belief in intensifying the fight against impunity.

In front of the journalist Erla Mëhilli in Euronews Albania, she said that: "Corruption is a crime, regardless of who commits it. No one should be outside the judicial system. It does not matter the rank or position of the person. If you commit the crime of corruption, you must answer in court. This is important. Everyone is equal before the law. This is the basic principle of justice in our system. We cooperate closely with the investigation and help SPAK build investigative capacity and improve work, as it is a newly built structure. This has to do, as I said before, with the creation of history. We've had some sensational cases come to light, but we have to make sure it doesn't end there. So, we must again focus on the problem of corruption, to influence traffic and not to judge whether he is a high political figure or not as important as he should be. Corruption is a crime and must be eradicated. That's why we need SPAK and the judiciary as a whole to fight it", said the Ambassador, who was also asked by Mëhilli about an assessment she could have of SPAK's work:

"It is not up to me to say since the judiciary is independent from political influences and from us. This is the duty of the prosecutors working in SPAK to handle the cases, so I will not tell you to investigate this or that. It's not our job. But in two and a half years of existence it has had a very big impact. It is a very new institution and now it needs to be strengthened and as you know BKH, the investigative structure, is still under construction. There should be more efficiency and here we expect them to strengthen and improve the creation of history by doing more", underlined Hohmann.
