Two days after the tensions with the Kosovo police, this is how the situation is in the municipalities in the north

The Kosovo police said that in the municipalities in the north of Kosovo, inhabited by a majority of Serbs, the situation is calm.

Veton Elshani from the Kosovo Police told Radio Free Europe that the situation in the north is calm and that police officials are continuing to stay near the building of the Municipality of Zveçan, Leposaviq and Zubin Potok. He added that there were no incidents during the night.

On May 26, in these three municipalities, groups of local Serbs clashed with the Kosovo Police, who assisted the new Albanian mayors to enter their offices. The buildings of these municipalities were previously used by Serbian parallel structures

Police used stun grenades and tear gas to disperse the protesters, while local Serbs threw stones at the police.

In Zveçan there were also shootings. Several police cars were burned, while five policemen were injured during the clashes.

The authorities in Kosovo have defended their decision to allow the new mayors of the north to enter their offices.

However, the international factor described the new mayors' visit to the municipalities in the north as "forced entry", condemning Pristina's actions.

The United States has asked the Government of Kosovo to refrain from "other actions that may increase tensions and promote violence".

The US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, warned that these actions will result in consequences in the US-Kosovo bilateral relations.
