After a 14-month closure due to the coronavirus pandemic, Greece opened its border to the citizens of northern Macedonia on Friday. The Bogorodica-Evzoni border crossing was opened by decision of the Greek Government. But to cross into Greek territory, citizens of Northern Macedonia must present proof that they have been vaccinated against the disease caused by the coronavirus, COVID-19, that they have passed the disease or have a negative PCR test, not older than 72 hours. Greece says it recognizes all COVID-19 vaccines, including Chinese and Russian, which have not yet been approved by the European Union.
The opening of the border crossing also coincided with the start of the summer tourist season in Greece. The decision of the Greek Government was announced earlier, and it has to do with the significant improvement of the epidemiological situation in Northern Macedonia. The Ministry of Health of Northern Macedonia reported on Friday 30 new cases of coronavirus infections, after testing 1,658 samples, and 16 victims. The number of healed continues to be many times higher than that of the infected. A total of 359 people were cured on Friday, up from 3,800 the day before - a record since the pandemic began last spring.
Northern Macedonia has so far vaccinated over 150,000 people. Vaccination of all registered persons over the age of 40 is expected to start on Monday. The Minister of Health, Venko Filipce, said that, next week, the Commission of Infectious Diseases will debate whether the citizens vaccinated with two doses of vaccine against COVID-19 will be released from the obligatory keeping of the mask indoors and outdoors. .
