LDK withdraws, decides to take part in Vjosa Osmani's vote for the

The Democratic League of Kosovo held a meeting of the Presidency yesterday, regarding the support or not of the Parliamentary Group of this party for the candidacy of Vjosa Osmani for the post of president of the country. As expected from the meeting held on Monday, where it was announced that LDK would avoid any possible obstacles to the election of the country's president, after yesterday's meeting, LDK chairman Lumir Abdixhiku announced that he will not present obstacles and will exercise its constitutional obligation to participate in the voting of the president of the country. This means that the Democratic League of Kosovo decided on Tuesday to take part in the voting for the election of the new president of Kosovo whenever the parliamentary session on this issue is held. "LDK will not obstruct the election of the country's president, that the LDK as always will exercise its constitutional obligation and participate in the vote of the country's president. I expect each MP to respect the collective will of the majority and not to hinder the new course of the LDK towards our original return. "I expect them to behave like institutionalists and overcome themselves and any grief they may have", said Abdixhiku.

Procedures for electing the president

The winning party in the February 14th snap parliamentary elections, Lëvizja Vetëvendosje, does not have the only votes needed to elect Vjosa Osmani as the country's president. for this reason, Prime Minister Albin Kurti and Ms. Osmani have held meetings with political parties in the country. The Democratic Party of Kosovo and the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo have clearly expressed their support for Osmani, while the Democratic League has secured participation in the session but not the votes of all its deputies in Parliament. The LDK has a total of 15 seats, but the votes of three of them are not certain for Osmani's candidacy. These are Agim Veliu, Avdullah Hoti and Driton Selmanaj, who had major disagreements with the former Speaker of Parliament during the last term. While the presidential election session will be held in April, the winning candidate must have 80 votes in the first round. If this is not achieved, the Constitution of Kosovo provides for other steps. According to the Constitution, the election of the president requires in the first two rounds of voting two thirds of the votes, while in the third round, it can be elected by a simple majority of 61 deputies, but at least 80 deputies must participate in the voting. If all 15 LDK deputies would vote for Ms. Osmani, plus the votes of the majority and those of non-Serb minorities, then the numbers will be in favor of candidate Osmani to win a 5-year term at the helm of the state of Kosovo. Prime Minister Kurti has previously stated that the "red line" for an agreement regarding the election of a new president is the Serbian community. So he agrees to make agreements with non-Serb communities, but not with the Serb List. Once all the above steps provided by the Constitution are exhausted, the country will have to go through the electoral process once again, so new elections must be held. All international actors and allies and collaborators of Kosovo have spoken out against such a scenario, seeking an agreement as soon as possible on the figure of the president, in order to complete the process of constituting post-election institutions. so new elections must be held.
