The secret reason why people eat meat is revealed by psychology
Written by SOT.COM.AL 3 Qershor 2023
If we ask an ordinary person why people eat meat they will always tell you 'because it tastes good'.
But if we ask Dr. Melanie Joy, who has been studying the psychological drive that makes people eat meat for decades, will give you a much more 'dark' but still interesting rationale.
As reported on the EducateInspireChange network, Dr. Joy believes that people eat meat because of a carnivorous ideology that has been installed in them for a long time in spite of vegetarianism or veganism.
"Carnism or the consumption of meat is the dominant ideology, which means it's ingrained in the ideology of society to the point where people think 'this is how it works,'" explains Joy.
"Just because something isn't considered 'the way things should be' doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Racism was not recognized as a problem or ideology earlier in history, but that doesn't mean it didn't exist. Likewise, carnism has been with us for some time, that's why it is taken as something natural by the majority".
While referring to small children who eat chicken meat, she added: "When we are born with a dominant ideology in the world, we cannot do anything other than look at the world with that eye."
"There are many people in the world who do not need to eat meat as they are geographically and socially. But many people have a choice when it comes to eating meat, just because they don't understand because of the blindness of ideology."
Psychology further explains that the consumption of meat causes the slaughtering processes of animal meat processing to be kept away from public view.
When farm animals are slaughtered or slaughtered, they are kept in cages away from the public eye, who do not understand what goes on in modern animal husbandry.
In defense of her vegetarian arguments, Joy brings up other examples to undermine the notion that meat consumption is "right" or "intelligent."
For example, she says that an ordinary pig has the intelligence of a 3-year-old child, or that chickens are able to distinguish between 100 different faces to recognize members of their own species.
Joy adds that agribusinesses try hard to keep the public ignorant of the cruel practices of meat production and processing, citing a quote by artist Paul McCartney who said, "If the walls of slaughterhouses were made of glass, everyone would to be vegetarians".
