Laboti is a herb which in Albania is usually used in pie, salad or soup recipes.

It is cultivated in our country in its two characteristic forms; wild and gentle.

Laboti with green leaves is found in the wild flora, while the one with light green to yellow leaves must be cultivated.

Precisely the soft labot, or as it is otherwise known, the white labot, has been announced by a specialist in the field as a rare species.

Laboti in Albania is found in two forms:

Green Labot or as it is known Atriplex hortense ssp.viridis Alef, forms strong and stable stems.

It is characterized by long, narrow, green to dark green leaves.

In this plant form, the leaves are folded when they have reached the characteristic size and maturity.

The yellow or white labota is known as Atriplex hortense ssp.lutens Alef. It forms fragile stems and broad leaves, light green to yellow in color, very tasty to eat.

Harvesting of this form is done by plucking the plant, when it has a height of 20-30 cm and full and soft foliage.

This is the most suitable form for cultivation in the open field.

Cultivation of Labot

It is planted in flat terraced plots, with exposure from the sun, deep soils rich in organic matter, and with the possibility of irrigation.

Planting of green labot takes place at the end of April, harvesting begins at the end of June and continues until October.

The yellow labot is planted hand-by-hand, during the March-October period. The crop comes to harvest 50-65 days after seed germination.

Watering, fertilizing and rotting the plants between the rows are carried out.

It has good resistance to diseases, low and high temperatures.

Gives good and stable production.

It is preferred for fresh consumption at home and for the local market.

The green labot is not at risk of extinction, because it is also found in the spontaneous flora; while the yellow one is at risk since it is cultivated and the vines are plucked from the plant.
