This is the best way to protect the heart from aging

This is the best way to protect the heart from aging

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the US, but experts say just a few healthy habits can make a big difference.

Doctors have selected five Eat This Not That tips to keep your heart healthy as you age.

"Aerobic exercise and resistance training are the most important for heart health," says Johns Hopkins physical therapist Kelly Stewart.

He adds that "while flexibility does not directly contribute to heart health, it is still important because it provides a good foundation for performing aerobic and strength exercises more efficiently." If you have a good musculoskeletal base, it allows you to do exercises that help your heart."

Smoking is extremely bad for the heart, experts warn, but not only for smokers, but also for passive smokers in their environment.

"Studies show that the risk of developing heart disease is about 25 to 30 percent higher for people who are exposed to secondhand smoke at home or at work," says cardiologist Dr. Mark Gilinov, reports N1 Zagreb.

As he explains, chemicals emitted from cigarette smoke promote the development of plaque in the arteries, which leads to the development of heart disease.

Avoid unhealthy fats

"Limiting the amount of saturated and trans fats you eat is an important step in reducing blood cholesterol and the risk of coronary artery disease. High blood cholesterol can lead to atherosclerosis, which can increase the risk of heart attack and stroke," said Dr. Brody Marthaler.

He recommends lean meats, poultry and fish, low-fat dairy products and eggs because they are one of the best sources of protein.

"Dental health is a good indicator of overall health, including your heart, because those with periodontitis often have the same risk factors for heart disease," says Dr. Gilinov.

The doctor explains that many studies have shown that the bacteria involved in the development of gum disease can enter the blood and cause an increase in C-reactive protein, a marker of inflammation in the blood vessels. These changes, according to Dr. Gilinov, can increase the risk of heart disease and stroke.
