CAREFUL! Never to be ignored, these signs indicate a brain tumor

Glioblastoma, also known as glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), is the most aggressive type of brain tumor. Signs and symptoms of glioblastoma are: headache, vomiting, memory loss, personality changes and localized neurological problems.

The type of symptoms produced depends more on the location of the tumor than on its pathological properties. The tumor may begin to produce symptoms quickly, but occasionally it is an asymptomatic condition until it reaches a large size.

Tests and procedures used to diagnose glioblastoma include:

Neurological test. During a neurological exam, your doctor will ask you about your signs and symptoms.

He or she can check your vision, hearing, balance, coordination, strength, and reflexes. Problems in one or more of these areas can provide clues as to which part of your brain may be affected by a brain tumor.

Imaging tests. Imaging tests help your doctor determine the location and size of your brain tumor. Magnetic resonance imaging is used to diagnose brain tumors and may be used in conjunction with specialized imaging that may include a CT scan.

Biopsy. Removing a sample of tissue for testing, a biopsy may be done with a needle before surgery or during surgery to remove your glioblastoma, depending on your particular situation and the location of your tumor.
