Breakfast is considered the most important meal of the day for a reason, and skipping it can be linked to health problems like slowing metabolism and weight gain, and even an increased risk of type 2 diabetes. Breakfast is especially important. for those who already have diabetes.

A low-carb, high-fat meal has been shown to keep blood sugar levels stable throughout the day. Although breakfast is important, you should pay attention to what you eat and drink.

"Caffeine can cause a spike in blood sugar for some people with diabetes," says nutritionist Lorin Manaker.

According to the Mayo Clinic, if you have diabetes and use insulin, about 200 milligrams of caffeine can be associated with higher blood sugar levels. Those who eat breakfast should also be careful about their fluid intake.

"Juice is a quick source of carbohydrates, so drinking it causes a spike in blood sugar," warns nutritionist Sydney Green.

Juices are poorer in fiber than the whole fruit in its original form. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, consuming fiber is essential for blood sugar control.

The solution is to pair those drinks, if you can't live without them, with foods that will help maintain blood sugar.

Such foods include sources of protein and fat, for example, you can have scrambled eggs with coffee, while with juice you have a handful of nuts or a sandwich with nut butter on whole grain bread.
