The Albanians were "caught red-handed" in the bar's house, the testimony of one of the arrested is revealed: They only asked me to water the flowers

A 49-year-old Belgian and two Albanians are in big trouble after facing up to two years in prison for their involvement in a plantation of 343 cannabis plants in a warehouse on the Veldstraat in Beerse, Belgium. "I was only asked to water the flowers," said the 60-year-old caretaker of the plantation.

After receiving a tip from the provincial drug reporting center plantationontdekt.be, the police area in the Turnhout region began an investigation into a cannabis plantation in a warehouse behind a house on the Veldstraat in Beerse in June. Police used a thermal imaging camera to determine that there was indeed a heat source in the shed. There was also a suspicious vehicle parked on the road.

These findings led to a search of the address in Veldstraat on 15 June. "The environment contained a total of 343 cannabis plants spread over two operational cultivation areas," said public prosecutor Marta Boroëicz at the court in Turnhout. “The plants were about eight weeks old and had not been harvested before. There was also a lot of material for running a plantation.”

The 60-year-old Albanian Nuredin K. was in the involved warehouse. He was arrested on the spot. "The man stated that he had been in the warehouse for a month and had not actually come out. He previously worked in construction in Germany. There they told him that he was too old for such a job", said the prosecutor. "Some other Albanians had promised him money if he would take care of the plants. He was not allowed to go out.”

Further investigation revealed that the plantation was located on the grounds of the parental home of Tom R. (49). The man's mother was present during the police search and stated that her son had rented the warehouse and did not know what was happening inside. Tom R. remained in Antwerp and was imprisoned not long after. He claimed he had rented the space to men looking for a warehouse to store insulation materials and roofing profiles. "She raises her eyebrows that there was an electric cable from the garage to the shed and that R. is also an electrician in training," explained Marta Boroëicz. "He really cooperated with the plantation by renting warehouses to Albanians. Ilir C., the 37-year-old Albanian, was tried for setting up the plantation, but did not appear in court.

The Public Prosecution demanded the sentence of R. with 18 months in prison and 1 year and 2 years in prison for the Albanians K. and C., respectively. The trio was also accused of stealing electricity. The municipal company Iveka has requested compensation of 25,157 euros.

Tom R.'s attorney asked the judge to release his client. "He met two Albanians in a cafe who were looking for a warehouse to store materials," he said. Nuredin K. also claimed that he did not know anything about a plantation beforehand. "I was just told I had to take care of flowers in a shop," he replied. The court will deliver the decision on December 22.
