Opera and Ballet Theater in its 70th anniversary, the artists: It is the main institution of musical art in the country, a difficult period when foreign works were banned for several years before the 90s

Opera and Ballet Theater in its 70th anniversary, the artists: It is the main

On November 27, 1953, the opera "Rusallka" was put on the Albanian stage, a date that entered the history of the National Theater of Opera and Ballet as the day of the foundation of this theater. TKOB turns 70 years old, but for those artists who started their artistic activity decades ago, this institution is the main one for musical art in the country. In this 70th anniversary of TKOB, the artists bring to attention not only the great work done over the years, but also the difficulties before the 90s. The first character on stage for Skënder Jazexhiu was in the ballet "Fadeta". At that time, I was a child in a play that was staged decades ago, to continue with different roles over the years. The first soloist in TKOB Jazexhiu also danced in the first Albanian ballet "Halili dhe Hajria", not in 1963 when it premiered, but later. Jazexhiu started working at TKOB in 1965 to retire in 2002, but he says that it was very important that this art institution was founded in our country in those years. "We are at those levels where we are honored with Albanian opera and creativity. I was at TKOB for the first time in 1957 as a student of the Ballet School that was next to the theater. The first ballet was "Fadeta", which I danced in 1960. The first choreographic school was opened near TKOB, while now it is independent. Opera was developed more with national works and creativity was developed with our forces, works with a national base", says Jazexhiu. With an activity in TKOB for years, Skënder Jazexhiu also tells about the difficult years in the artistic activity of artists. According to him, even though there was a time when foreign works were almost banned, artists succeeded in their artistic activity. "There was a period before '90 when we were banned from classical works, it was difficult to survive as professional artists. Foreign ballets and operas were banned and we encountered difficulties, but there is one thing we survived, because we did our Albanian creativity with all the works. It was difficult to break that path only with Albanian works, which we represented abroad and all our works", says Jazexhiu.

TKOB raised artists professionally

The singer of the Folk Ensemble and leader of the vocal group Gramoz Burba started his activity near this institution in the 80s. He shows that TKOB is of great importance in the artistic life of the country. "TKOB is the main institution of musical art in Albania. Since the establishment of this theater, the development of classical music and especially opera and ballet was seen as a necessity. It was lucky for Albania that this theater was created in those years", says Burba. With an appreciated activity in this institution, Gramoz Burba shows that the staging of foreign works in this theater increased the artists professionally, but over the years there have been difficulties. "As a theater, many artists were given the opportunity to make their musical careers in the opera genre. Of course, the large number of performances, especially in the 60s, the introduction of foreign operas, whether Russian or Italian, shaped these artists, made them known and raised them professionally. The period after 1972 had an obstacle to the momentum that opera gained in those years, because foreign works were almost completely banned and importance was given to Albanian music, Albanian operas. This lasted until 1986-'87 and later operas such as "Traviata", "La Bohem", etc., works of great authors, began to be introduced", says Burba. On November 27, 1953, the opera "Rusallka" by the composer Alexander Sergeyevich Dargomyzhsky was an Albanian-Soviet production. Important names of Albanian art such as Mustafa Krantja, Panajot Kanaçi, Jorgjia Truja, Marie Kraja, Hysen Pelinku, Zihni Berati, Gjyzepina Kosturi, Haxhi Tafaj, Zeqir Agolli, and 150 other artists participated in this opera. raised Albanian opera to high artistic levels. This constellation of artists helped create new generations of lyrical singers, composers, dancers, scenographers and costume designers.
