Disinformation in the Russian-Ukrainian conflict

Disinformation in the Russian-Ukrainian conflict

We say from the beginning that disinformation should not be confused with misinformation, which is not intentional. So, for example, if a person or a news agency spreads information about which they do not know for sure whether it is true, but believe it to be so, we are not dealing with genuine disinformation. For this reason, disinformation is often treated as a misinformation. But, if the purpose of such an action is to deceive its users, or when disinformation plays the role of destroying the credibility of those who will spread it (especially news agencies), it should be considered as such, that is, as genuine disinformation.

Precisely by means of deliberate disinformation, Moscow tries, among other things, to undermine the US support for Ukraine, having as a starting point the needs of Kiev for armaments, announced these days "The Washington Post" first after analyzing the internal documents of the Kremlin, provided by a European information service. This was also confirmed by the "Kiev Independent" press organ. Russia is deploying new online disinformation methods. $60 billion in U.S. aid to Ukraine continues to be delayed as far back as fall 2023, while different versions of an aid bill have stalled over disagreements over U.S. internal border security. In February of this year, a $95 billion aid package for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan was adopted by the US Senate, while House Speaker Mike Johnson has so far refused to include this problem in the agenda. Russia has a ten-year disinformation strategy. Russia's latest disinformation campaign is part of a Kremlin strategy aimed at "empowering the voices of populist, anti-establishment politicians who oppose the U.S. global role," The Washington Post said, citing analysts and former - senior US officials. Political strategists have written thousands of fictional news articles, social media posts, and commentaries promoting the idea of ??American isolationism. Russia's disinformation campaign also aims to "stir up fears about US border security and increase economic and racial tensions in the US". The Washington Post noted that one of the political strategists instructed a Russian to post comments of "no more than 200 characters and punctuate the name of a resident living on the outskirts of a major city." The fictitious American also had to describe President Joe Biden's policies as "collapsing", oppose additional military aid to Ukraine and insist that "the money be spent on America's border, not Ukraine's". In this context, he emphasized that "the attention should be focused on the number of immigrants who cross the border between Mexico and the USA. "Border security should be a priority over any aid to Ukraine." And, last but not least, to accuse the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskiy of being corrupt. Still according to The Washington Post, the Russian disinformation campaign has portrayed "white Americans" as the "main losers" and "Russia has ramped up its propaganda operations as part of a second front that officials and former senior officials Westerners have said that it has become almost as important for Moscow as the military campaign in Ukraine. Russian propaganda has become the subject of discussion even in the US Congress itself. Three days ago the Republican politician Mike Turner, the chairman of the Permanent Committee on Information of the House of Representatives, declared in an interview for CNN that the Russian propaganda has taken large proportions in the ranks of some of his colleagues and has even managed to "be mentioned in the plenary session of the House." We see that anti-Ukraine and pro-Russia messages are coming directly from Russia, some of them at the plenary session of the Chamber". Further, he added: "There are members of Congress who still incorrectly state today that NATO is the cause of the current conflict between Russia and Ukraine, which, of course, is not true." The facts show that, from the moment of the invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation, in addition to the confrontations on the battlefield, a genuine informational war began. This is the first armed conflict in that region that has found coverage on television and social networks, while rigged images, false statements, manipulated figures and mass propaganda have become part of the arsenal. It is worth noting that Russian disinformation methods have also changed. Behind a supposedly patriotic, pro-Ukrainian propaganda, hides the tendency to create internal conflicts in Ukraine, to incite hatred, to incite fierce clashes between parties of different directions, between the government and the opposition. Thus, for example, they push former President Poroshenko's party to oppose Zelenskiy's party. Attempts are also made to incite conflict between military organizations and government bodies; linguistic, religious conflicts, etc. so that Ukrainians are not united as a nation, but fight among themselves, not with the external common enemy. The most effective tool to combat disinformation is the propaganda of the truth in the print and visual media so that the local opinion, especially the foreign one, already aware of the justice of the Ukrainian people's defensive war, is fed with as much fresh material as possible. broadcast live from the front. Thus, the protests around the globe, in defense of the Ukrainian cause, will be amplified and will influence more and more for the victory of Ukraine, serving the freedom fighters as an inexhaustible source of inspiration and encouragement.manipulated figures and mass propaganda have become part of the arsenal. Returning once again to disinformation, it can also be positive when it is done in the name of freedom and democracy. The classic example of this is the disinformation that was carried out during World War II leading up to the D-Day landings, when British intelligence managed to misinform the German Nazis into believing that most of the landing force was in Kent (England), from where they would cross the English Channel. Indeed, the landing took place in Normandy. Ukrainian intelligence services are using such methods from time to time with success, to the detriment of the Russian aggressors.
