Kamer Prela, patriot and fighter for Albania
Written by Nga Gjon Neçaj 29 Nëntor 2023
One of those men who will not be forgotten is the patriot Kamer Prela. Kamer was born in Peraj in the rahina of Nikaj-Merturi in 1880, in those years when the enlightened minds of the nation embraced patriotic ideas and the platform of the historical decisions of the Albanian League of Pizren. He was from the same tribe as Mic Sokol. He grew up educated by his father and the relatives of that door in Peraj, a brave and generous door that occupied the province. He listened to Mic Okoli, Sylejman Vokshin and Abdyl Tosken, and these influenced his patriotic and manly formation. And very soon Kameri took place in mountain odes, in men's assemblies. In the years 1910-1912, when Dergut Pasha and his army invaded the Gjakova Mountains, Kameri joined the brave men of Nikaj-Merturi, who were commanded by Prel Tuli. From that time, Kameri's life was in the mountains, kachak. He often told his brothers that he would not marry, that he was "married" to his expensive mauser, the cry of which could be heard throughout the province. He had gone to the mountain in the fight for freedom, against the foreign invaders. In 1915, Serbo-Montenegros attacked the Gjakova Mountains. In the spring of that year, a bloody war took place in the Kolci region. Many brave mountaineers fell and were wounded, among them Ali Haka, Kamer's close comrade in arms and ideals. Kameri armed over 20 female fighters in that bloody battle, killing many of them. In the above attempt, he was seriously injured. He was now 35 years old. The folk song conveys the heroism of the mountain people of those parts:
He united the Sokol Basha tribe,
Tonight, Shala is coming to us,
Kamer Prela brave dragon,
Hajdar Uke has a word,
Is Hajdar coming with me?
In the neck of Kolci, I fought,
They have taken the neck of the goats.
When they fell on the slopes of Geghysen,
The camera itself is called;
I was taken by a gun in the vault,
The vault's neck is all over me,
Kurtesh Kurti rapped quietly,
Bek Selimi is waking up,
This Krasniqja has gone all out.
From the memories of Kamer's nephew, Bafti Zeqiri, we have saved this episode: They ask Kamer Prela to hand over his weapon to the gendarmerie command post. The brothers suggest that he leave, because he was in danger for at least 5-6 months. But he acted differently. He presented himself and when they asked him for the Armenian, he answered: "Lord Commander! In the mountains of these parts, we have a custom that women and weapons are not given." He said these words to the Austrian commander and fled to the mountains. Kamer Prela had a black file in the command of the Austrian gendarmerie in Shkoder. They managed to catch him, sent him to prison in Shkoder. The verses of a popular song show the situation in the Austrian prisons of that time:
The kingdom of Nemce, the kingdom of the former Khan,
You are not giving them bread with food,
They don't even let me smoke.
In Kamer Prela prison, he met Tunxh Miftar, the leader of Merturi, whose life he later saved. After 6 months, the order came to hang him on the rope. When Kamer's name was called, small body and cygace, he was asked what he wanted to say as his last words, he answered: "I am happy today, because I am dying with honor for my country." The prison commander was surprised by this is the answer of this Albanian from the northern mountains. He immediately changed his mind. They spared his life and sentenced him to life imprisonment. After 6 days, he was sent to Vienna, where after 3 years, in 1918, he died in prison. He died for Albanianism, because he could not stand the foreign rule and fought it with weapons until the end of his young life. In Peraj, Mserr neighborhood, the walls of the three-story tower of Kamer Preles still stand. It has resisted the ravages of time and stands as a historical monument to show the generations the sacrifices their ancestors made for this country, for Albania.
