168 police officers arrested in one year, most of them for corruption and abuse

The Police Oversight Agency publishes the 2022 annual report on arrested and prosecuted officers, as well as the types of complaints that citizens have made against them. Referring to the data of this agency, from January to December, 168 police officers were arrested. Compared to 2021, 80.6% more were arrested. Most of them are by court decision, investigated for corruption, misuse of duties, inaction and arbitrary actions. During the past year, the disciplinary investigation started for 58 employees, of which 42 were at the executive level, 14 were first-level management employees, and less for the other levels. According to the data, the highest number of complaints that citizens have made are for the Public Order and Safety police, with 826 complaints. It is followed by the Traffic Police with 589 complaints, 429 for crime investigators, and less for other sectors. While the highest number of violations reported to the Police Supervision Agency are the unjust fines imposed by the Traffic Police for violations of the Traffic Code. A total of 612 cases were reported for this category, followed by complaints about officers who committed arbitrary actions and those who violated standard procedures.
