"Denial of the rights of the opposition in the parliament", Albana Vokshi meeting with the EP commissioner Várhelyi
Written by SOT.COM.AL 8 Dhjetor 2023
The deputy of the Democratic Party and vice-president of the EPP Women's Forum, Albana Vokshi, has held several meetings in the European Commission, the European Parliament and the Flemish Parliament in Brussels. "The European Commission is closely following the situation created by the denial of the opposition's rights in the parliament", says the reaction distributed to the media.
The Commissioner for enlargement Olivér Várhelyi expressed his attention to Albania to MP Vokshi during a meeting in Brussels, which according to him focused on the parliamentary crisis and the crisis of democracy due to the massive buying of elections.
Extension Commissioner Olivér Várhelyi
As a representative of the opposition, Mrs. Vokshi expressed to the Commissioner her concern about the deterioration of the rights of the deputies of the DP and the opposition in Albania. She familiarized Commissioner Varhely with the demands of the opposition to be allowed to exercise its constitutional rights for parliamentary control, through the instruments that the Constitution provides, including the requests for investigative commissions, the obstacles for the electoral reform commission.
"The majority has rejected almost all the demands of the opposition in order to carry out its controlling role. In 2 years, the government has rejected 8 investigative commissions and every time it votes against, it comes up with a new excuse to not allow the investigation of its corrupt acts. Our demands are formulated in the same way as that of the investigative commission on incinerators, which the government allowed to be set up after pressure from international partners. In this way, Prime Minister Edi Rama intends not to allow the disclosure of affairs and the transparency of abuses and corruption," Albana Vokshi emphasized.
Ms. Vokshi expressed to the commissioner for expansion the determination of the opposition to protect its constitutional rights and not to allow the government to appoint the opposition. Thanking the European Commission for the realistic attitude maintained in the progress of the last report, Albana Vokshi asked the Commissioner for Enlargement to stay close to Albania in order not to allow the country to slide further towards an authoritarian regime, as well as to exert pressure on the majority. to respect the constitutional rights of the opposition in parliament as well as an electoral reform based on the latest OSCE/ODIHR report on local elections as well as the 2023 Progress Report for Albania.
Ms. Vokshi had several meetings in the European Parliament with Croatian MEP Sun?ana Glavak, Italian MEP Salvatore De Meo, as well as in the Flemish Parliament with MEPs Arnout Coel and Karl Vanlouwe, with whom she shared the same concerns about the alarming situation of the opposition's rights in Albania, the parliamentary and constitutional crisis and requested support for the international factor to turn its eyes to Albania to protect democracy and pluralism.
