Washington in line with the EU, Serbia's ultimatum for the recognition of Kosovo
Written by SOT.COM.AL 8 Dhjetor 2023
On the eve of the European leaders' decision to officially condition Serbia's membership on the recognition of Kosovo, the USA has also supported this position. American Ambassador to Belgrade Chris Hill said that Belgrade should make concessions to get something in return.
"It is up to the European Union to define the conditions, we cannot do that. It is not helpful if the US persuades the EU to do something, or if we pressure Serbia to do certain things. We must put joint pressure on him. Much better neighborly relations between these countries are needed throughout the Western Balkans region. For Serbia, the issue of Kosovo is very difficult, I don't need to explain it to anyone in Serbia. But I think the whole process implies that you give something and also get something in return."
According to Hill, the formula presented by EU envoy Miroslav Lajcak is a good formula.
"The union of municipalities with a Serbian majority, which is being negotiated, marks a clear perspective of what the future of the Serbs will look like there. At the same time, Kosovo wants a future where it can join some international organizations, which is also part of this process".
The European condition for the recognition of Kosovo comes on the eve of the December 17th parliamentary elections. Where none of the Serbian parties is interested in making concessions in this direction.
