?Cold weather increases the risk of heart attack, here's how to protect yourself

?Cold weather increases the risk of heart attack, here's how to protect

Several factors contribute to this increased risk during the colder months.

To mitigate these risks, you should prioritize some health measures during winter. These include maintaining regular physical activity, following a heart-healthy diet, keeping warm to prevent narrowing of the blood vessels, and getting vaccinated against seasonal infections.

Being aware of these seasonal risks and adopting proactive measures can help you keep your heart healthy during the winter months.

"The risk of a heart attack in winter is high and is more common in the elderly ," said Rishi Bhargava at Medicover Hospital, Navi Mumbai in India.

Bhargava sheds light on the increasing incidence of heart attacks in adults, however, it can also occur in young people.

"A rapid drop in outside temperature can result in sudden heart damage. It can also increase the chances of hospitalization or possibly death. As heart attack is one of the biggest causes of death globally, patients with heart disease should take care of their heart health during the winter season ," warns Bhargava, reports Times of India.

Bhargava explains that in cold weather, blood vessels shrink and narrow. This increases the impact on the heart by reducing blood flow to the body, which increases metabolic stress. In addition, it can increase blood pressure. These conditions put a lot of strain on the heart.

"It's harder for the body to maintain a healthy temperature in cold weather, as it loses heat faster and the heart has to pump more warm blood, which puts more strain on it ," Bhargava said.

The prevalence of viral infections, such as the flu, during winter adds another layer of risk. Infections can stress the cardiovascular system and increase the likelihood of heart-related complications.

“Minor ailments like cold, sore throat and cough are also common during winter. Although they are usually very mild ailments, they can be quite dangerous for someone whose heart is already under pressure from other causes. The risk of catching the flu increases during the winter because indoor heating and low temperatures cause low humidity. People with heart problems are at risk of getting the flu. Get a flu shot and see a doctor if you have any flu symptoms,” recommends Bhargava.

Pay attention to the "overheating" of the body

During winter, we dress in warm clothes, especially in places where the temperature drops to a much lower temperature.

"Overheating can be a result of wearing warm clothes and then exercising. If you have heart disease, overheating can cause your blood vessels to suddenly dilate, which can result in hypotension, or low blood pressure. If you notice that you are sweating while you are outside in the cold, you are overheating. If you have heart disease, this sweating should be taken seriously. Stop whatever activity you are doing and go indoors ," said Bhargava.

Lifestyle changes are a challenge for heart health

According to experts, in extremely cold conditions, people stay inside, which limits physical activity and slows heart circulation.

"Alcohol, holidays and lack of sleep during the winter can put a lot of stress on the heart. Also, heightened emotional reactions, if not controlled, can lead to cardiac stress. Before you go out, stay away from alcohol. It causes the blood vessels in your skin to dilate, which is warm to the touch, but draws heat away from your vital organs,” warns Bhargava.

Bhargava recommends drinking more water and eating light meals, eating less sweets, salty and fatty foods, and avoiding brisk walking or any strenuous physical activity outside in the cold.
