What will happen to the economy? The World Bank 'sounds the alarm sirens'

What will happen to the economy? The World Bank 'sounds the alarm

The Albanian economy is being challenged by the resources that enable its growth. The World Bank estimates that the country must find a new model, otherwise there is a risk that growth will be stuck at low levels.

"We think that this is an important moment to rethink the sources of economic growth. Until now, growth has been based on construction, consumption or tourism, but this does not make these resources sufficient to have better jobs or to release Albania's potential to increase the country's economy", said Emanuel Salinas, Manager of World Bank Office for Albania.

The World Bank predicts that the country's economy will grow by 3.3 percent this year, 3.4 percent in 2024 and 3.5 percent in 2025.

The almost pessimistic forecasts would even turn out to be very optimistic if the map of broken peace in the world were to expand further.

"Among the external risks is the further escalation of geopolitical tensions, the slowdown in global growth, the further increase in financing costs or obstacles in regional trade", said Hilda Shijaku, economist at the World Bank in Albania.

At a time when the government expected to approve the salary increase in the public administration within this month, the World Bank says that the process is not being done in the right way. Rising wages are translating into less productivity in workplaces.

"In our point of view, it would be good if, in order to promote productivity, salary increases were also based on productivity levels. Anyway, this is a challenge that our countries have faced, that is, to keep the qualified workforce", said the economist.

During the presentation of the "Spring 2024 for Europe and Central Asia" report, the World Bank economist, Natasha Rovo, also indicated the directions in which the pension scheme in the country will be revised.

"There are four key areas in which we have relied on the revision of the pension scheme. Coverage, in terms of contributors and beneficiaries, adequacy in relation to what should be paid. We also want the pension system to be as independent and financially stable as possible", said Natasha Rovo, economist at the World Bank.

According to the forecasts of the World Bank, inflation in Albania will continue at an average level until the end of 2026.
