Do you know why airplanes have rounded windows?
Written by SOT.COM.AL 30 Nëntor 2023
If you ask a young child to draw an airplane, they will most likely draw the passenger windows as small and oval, but airplanes haven't always looked like that. The de Havilland Comet, an early commercial aircraft design, had square windows. But within just five years of their introduction, all three planes had a series of tragic accidents.
After the third crash in 1954, an investigation determined that all three crashes were caused by cracked window frames, a result of their square design. The square windows were found to cope poorly with the stress caused by the increased cabin pressure that comes with flying at high altitudes.
However, high altitude is a necessary element of commercial flight, there is less drag, which in turn means less fuel used. This is ideal for airlines as it saves them money and reduces the impact of flying on the environment. There is also less turbulence at higher altitudes, which makes the flight more comfortable.
What was the solution? Replacing square windows with oval ones. This helps to evenly distribute the pressure applied to the window, thus reducing the chance of cracking.
