Do we have to wash the rice before cooking? Experts end the housewives' dilemma

Written by SOT.COM.AL 19 Gusht 2021

Years ago, Albanian housewives used to rinse the rice with cold water before cooking it.
With the opening of markets and the introduction of diversified products, but also with growing commitments, many housewives began to give up this practice.
There are housewives who believe that washing rice is already completely unnecessary and has no effect on its final cooking.
This according to experts is wrong.
Is It Worth The Rent To Wash Rice Before Cooking?
According to experts, referred to by AgroWeb.org washing rice makes a major difference, especially when it comes to long grain rice.
Rinsing removes impurities accumulated in the package and above all eliminates the starch that coats the surface of the grain which then causes it to stick.
For rinsing the rice you can use a glass container or a colander.
At the beginning of the process, the water released by the rice is turbid and then during rinsing the water will be translucent.
This rinsing will help the pilaf to crumble easily and the grains not to stick to each other.
However, this rule does not apply if you are going to cook risotto with vegetables or meat.
This specific cooking requires a more sour and creamy rice.
The creaminess of risotto is also enabled by the starch on the surface of each grain.
Experts say that in many different packages, rice is mixed with powdered chalk to prevent moisture.
The powder in question may not be dangerous to health, but nevertheless none of us will have it in cooking.
There are arguments according to which, rinsing rice eliminates grain nutrients.
White rice, on the other hand, is a grain processed and stripped of nutrients.
This shows that rinsing it does not play a very important role in this regard./AgroWeb.org
