Ukraine gives positive signals for Kosovo

Ukraine has not recognized Kosovo's independence, but this did not prevent the head of the Foreign Affairs Committee in the Ukrainian Parliament, Oleksandr Merezhko, from joining calls for a more balanced approach in the dialogue process between Kosovo and Serbia.

And this act, according to the professor from Johns Hopkins Univeristy, Edward Joseph, brings closer the recognition of Kosovo by Ukraine.

He further says that some of the American congressmen can push forward this message by asking the Biden Administration to ask Kiev to recognize Kosovo.

"Menendez, Titus, Torres can advance their powerful message by urging the Biden administration to ask Kiev to recognize Kosovo by limiting Russian and Chinese influence in the Balkans, ending Belgrade-centrism in Balkan politics and freeing the Kosovo Serbs from being used as hostages", said Joseph.

But more skeptical about this issue is the social-democratic politician, Nenad Çanak.

"At this stage, it is difficult for Ukraine to recognize Kosovo's independence. Ukraine is currently aiming to get back its territories, Crimea and Donbass. If today Ukraine would accept Kosovo's independence, Russia would use this opportunity for propaganda by drawing parallels between Kosovo and Crimea", he says for TV1

However, he does not exclude the possibility that Ukraine will recognize Kosovo, after the end of the war with Russia.

According to him, this move from Kiev would also positively affect the 5 non-recognizing states of the European Union.

"Kosovo must continue to support Ukraine so that when the latter is completely freed from Russia, then there would be no reason not to recognize Kosovo's independence. Of course, this action of Ukraine would have an impact on those 5 countries of the European Union, which have not yet recognized the independence of Kosovo", says Çanak.
