The Constitutional Court of Albania takes the next presidency of the Conference of European Constitutional Courts

A delegation of the Constitutional Court of Albania, consisting of the President of this Court, Mrs. Holta Zacaj, Mr. Sandër Beci, judge, as well as Mrs. Vilma Premti, director of the cabinet, participated in the XIX Congress of the Conference of European Constitutional Courts on the topic "Forms and limitations of judicial restraint: the experience of constitutional courts", which took place in Chisinau, Moldova, on May 22-23 2024, under the chairmanship of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Moldova.

Presidents and representatives of constitutional courts and equivalent European institutions that exercise constitutional control, members of the Conference of European Constitutional Courts, other important representatives, such as Mrs. Siofra O'Leary, President of the European Court of Human Rights, Ms. Claire Bazy Malaurie, President of the Venice Commission, as well as the highest representatives of the state in the Republic of Moldova.

The Constitutional Court of Albania has been a full member of the Conference of European Constitutional Courts since 2002 and has regularly participated in the congresses and activities organized within this membership. The Conference of European Constitutional Courts was founded in 1972 and unites around 40 courts and equivalent constitutional institutions. The purpose of its creation has been the promotion and exchange of information among its members about issues related to the methods and practices of constitutional control, as well as the sharing of experiences and opinions on institutional, structural and practical problems in the field of constitutional law and that public.

Within the framework of the work of the XIX Congress of the Conference of European Constitutional Courts, one of the bodies of the Conference - the Circle of Chairmen - has been convened, which has also considered the request of the Constitutional Court of Kosovo to become a member with full rights of this Conference. Since it was not possible to obtain the necessary number of votes for the approval of this request, the Circle of Chairmen has decided to set up a committee, of which the Constitutional Court of Albania is also a part, which will prepare the necessary materials for the reconsideration of this request within the next meeting of the Circle of Chairmen. Likewise, the Circle of Speakers has approved with a qualified majority of votes the candidacy of the Constitutional Court of Albania to be the presiding court of this conference for the next three years and the organizing court of its XX Congress in Albania.
